  • Katherine Rhoda, January 20-22: Maine folk musician Katherine Rhoda sings in a sensitive and rousing voice, and plays her Marxophone, violin-guitar, Lithuanian kankles, and more. Sharing originals and traditional music with joy and spirit, her goals are Big Fun and authentic human connection through music. www.katherinerhoda.com

 

  • Emily Nyman & Lynn Berry, March 2-4: Emily has appeared on the CBS/WCAX TV Morning Music Showcase on several occasions. Her recordings have been aired on Vermont public radio, WOMR Provincetown, Rainbow World Radio, and Sirius Radio. Emily and Lynn’s music has also been aired extensively on the Internet, earning top 40 status on Rainbow World Radio for June and July 2005. Emily was a finalist for favorite female musician in the Pride in the Arts Award (Stonewall Society). In January 2007, Emily and Lynn were interviewed on Pat Marino’s Sunset Cruise show which often receives requests for their music (Sirius Radio 109Q). Emily performed at Equality Forum’s Teen Panel presentation in Philadelphia in May 2007. In April 2008, Emily and her band appeared on the WCAX/CBS Late Night Saturday show hosted by Tim Kavanaugh. Emily and Lynn have received recognition for “Give Me a Dream” and “ShadowTime” from the Eventide Arts Songfest 2008.   • Brief Awakening, March 9-11: Brief Awakening is an all female original, acoustic-rock trio featuring: piano, djembe, drums, acoustic guitar, and bass. Since September 2008, Brief Awakening has been a part of the Boston music scene playing numerous clubs and venues such as The Midway and The Middle East Upstairs. Their music has been positively reviewed by The Noise and The Weekly Dig. With unique instrumentation and dual-lead female vocals rich with harmony; Brief Awakening's sound has been compared to Belle and Sebastian, The Dresden Dolls and everything in between.   • Lynn Deeves, March 16-18: Maine singer-songwriter Lynn Deeves honed her stage/vocal skills in the 80's and 90's as a high-energy "chicksingah" performing in rock bands on the New England club circuit (earning recognition as Maine Female Vocalist of the Year). Upon hanging up her spandex, the songwriting Muse called and Lynn has been answering ever since with her versatile, original mix of blues, folk and gospel influences combined with a powerful, soulful voice. Her sharp wit and dynamic stage presence continue to captivate, as Portland Press Herald says "five star stage presence..this gal's got a set of pipes."   • Antara, March 23-25: Whether busy conjuring variations of rhythm folk poetry in song lyrics or exploring the percussive-like dynamics of her trademark guitar riffs, independent folk songstress Antara continues to establish herself as a 'new' folk artist who is expanding the forefront of women’s music and the independent folk movement. Having performed professionally for a dozen years in more than 500 venues throughout New England, Canada, the Midwest and the South, Antara’s unique fusion of rhythmic folk music and interactive coffee house performance capitalizes on a consistent sharing of the sociological perspective that shapes her life, love and work. www.littleweirdgirl.com
  • Michelle Colby & Keila & Gael Force, March 30-April 1: Michelle Colby & Keila combine two distinct styles and backgrounds to create a unique sound that pulls from their roots. Michelle comes from a small town just outside of Nashville where she was influenced by many types of music throughout her life. Kelia was born in Brazil. Her vocals have been compared to “chocolate”…smooth with with Latin undertones. Both write original music, play several instruments, and bend their vocals to create beautiful harmonies.   • Gael Force is an Irish duo. Sharon Galvin & Claire O’Brien were both born and raised in Ireland. They began playing together in January of 2009 and found a unique blend of vocals and percussion. They mix their traditional and contemporary Irish music influence into their love of a wide variety of music from the 60’s through today. Gael Force can be found playing at various cafes, pubs, restaurants and the like around New England.   • Jenica Rayne & Lynne Hanson, April 6-8:  Having worked together for several years, backing each others original work and as part of the acclaimed roots band: Calamity Janes, Canadians Jenica and Lynne are teaming up for an evening of fun, original entertainment. Jenica Rayne is a passionate songwriter, accomplished guitarist and seasoned performer - a story teller who draws her audience in with lyric driven songs that speak from the heart. She has released three critically acclaimed CD's Hall of Memories (1999), Essential Elements (2005), Live Rayne (2007) and several singles (2010) and (2011). Jenica’s live performance runs the emotional gamut, from the rueful, upbeat silliness of Call It What You Like, to the haunting spareness of Blues Skies Dreaming. "Jenica paints perfect pictures with her words that evoke deep feelings spoken from her soul to ours.   • Lynne Hanson is a talented singer-songwriter. Her singing is reminiscent of Norah Jones and Alison Krauss, and she writes compelling lyrics and haunting melodies in the style of James Taylor. Her first CD, The Garden (under the band name, Chivaree, 2006) was named one of 2007’s top albums by CBC’s Fresh Air’s host, Jeff Goodes. Both the Garden, and her second cd, "All the Time", have received airplay on a number of CBC shows across the country, including Jurgen Goth’s Disc Drive, Shelagh Rogers’ new show, Canada Reads, and Jeff Goodes’ Fresh Air. www.chivaree.ca

 

  • Kristi Martel, April 13-15: Voted Rhode Island's Best Female Alt-Rock Vocalist, songwriter and avant-soul piano diva Kristi Martel has been featured on MTV/LOGO, NPR, WERS, and in Curve Magazine. Her powerful voice is at once sweet and bitter, emotional and visionary, articulating prayers and quirky autobiographical narratives in the same breath. Through Sealed Lip Records she has released six CDs. Her newest album Ravengirl is full of joy, with the healing and transformation Kristi has undergone after her former life partner's suicide in 2003. Ravengirl received a "highly recommended" from the Providence Journal and stellar reviews from Motif Magazine, Bay Windows, Curve Magazine, and the Providence Phoenix. Kristi has recorded demos for her full-length CD, Sacred Whore, and is excited that they are going to be released on vinyl!   • Kate Jordan & CJ McKenna, April 20-22: Kate Jordan and CJ McKenna have a special kind   of connection, a harmony of emotion which is evident from the first note. Like a favorite t-shirt, each time this duo appears at the Highlands, they bring a delightful mix of comfort, warmth and playfulness. Their music reflects individual styles that while different, work together beautifully. It's acoustic, rhythmic, touching, funny, familiar and sweet.   • Jamie Anderson, April 27-29: Singer-songwriter-parking lot attendant Jamie Anderson has played her songs in hundreds of venues including women's music festivals, pride events and colleges. She has ten recordings including her newest, Better Than Chocolate. She’s country without the big hair, jazz without the weird chords and bluegrass without the whiney tenor with songs about klepto mother-in-laws, the joy of menopause and moving to the land of maple sugar and hockey. www.jamieanderson.com

  • Jennifer Matthews, May 4-6: Songstress Jennifer Matthews is a noted original singer/songwriter with a powerful dynamic vocal range. Her songs are missions from the frontlines of life and have been described as melodic, infectious and haunting. Jennifer has cultivated a sophisticated blend of rock with hints of mood & blues on her electric Baritone guitar. While maintaining her strong background in rootsy rock, she slings her blue Martin, combining both instruments equally into her distinctive style. Jennifer is currently working on her 7th full length record "Tales of a Salty Sweetheart" to be released in the Spring of 2012. www.jennifermatthews.com 
  • Kelli Dunham & Sinclair Sexsmith, May 11-13: Kelli Dunham (kellidunham.com) is an ex-nun, butch-identified stand-up comic and author of four books of humorous non-fiction, including two children's books being used by a conservative home schooling association in their science curriculum. She has appeared on Showtime, the Discovery Channel and was once asked to emcee a livestock auction. Her two comedy CDs “I am NOT a 12 Year Old Boy” and “Almost Pretty” are in regular rotation on Sirius Satellite Radio's Raw Dog mainstream Comedy Station. She was the winner of the 2007 Fresh Fruit Festival Award of Distinction for stand up comedy, but t is unlikely that she will ever again be called distinguished.
  • Sinclair Sexsmith writes the award-winning personal online project Sugarbutch Chronicles: The Sex, Gender, and Relationship Adventures of a Kinky Queer Butch Top at sugarbutch.net.   • Linq, May 18-20: Linq is a modern-day protest singer, but don’t expect some wide-eyed hippie cooing about love and daisies. Her music will make you want to dance around and then go out and call your congressman. She’s released multiple CDs, receives international airplay, and she was voted Musical Artist of 2009 in the Pride in the Arts Music Awards. Her song “Change the Picture” was one of the 22 nominees in the Political Song category in the 2009 Just Plain Folks Music Awards (world’s largest with 560,000 song submissions). She was named OUTstanding OUTMusician for her music and activism in the 7th Annual 2011 OUTMusic Awards, and Curve Magazine calls her song “No Person on the Line” the ‘best healthcare rage song ever.’ www.linqmusic.com/

 

  • 3girlZband, June 1-3: 3girlZ have been rocking Canada and the U.S. for the past decade, performing at festivals, clubs, special events, private parties, and wherever else they can plug in their guitars and play!
